About

Hello!

My name is Bones Lake and I am a digital Illustrator and Character Designer!

Creating digital art is my escapism in the truest sense of the word. The solace I find in my imagination helps me exist amongst the monotony of everyday life. I avoid the blandness of our world by augmenting it or creating new ones myself. Art is my outlet, the way I can soothe my wanderlust and daydreaming for something more.

Despite my imagination being my attempt at escapism, my life and experiences heavily influence and inspire my work and the stories and worlds I create. Every movie, show, and game I’ve watched or played and fallen in love with, like Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal and American McGee’s Alice: Madness Returns, define the visual foundations of my repertoire. Gothic and Dark Fantasy as genres play heavily into every story or piece of work I like to make. My upbringing in two differing religious households (one Christian, the other Atheist Satanist/Agnostic) also contributes to the imagery and symbolism that appears within my artwork and entangles itself with my interest in the grimm and gothic.

The last aspect of myself that plays a part in my art is my identity and experience as a queer person. Growing up, it was a rarity to see myself or my community represented in the work that I consumed, so I started creating that representation for myself. Every story and almost every character I make is queer in some way, be it who they are attracted to or their gender identity.

With my digital art, all my inspirations, and imagination, I illustrate the characters, creatures, and the world they exist within in moments rather than continuous storylines. The worlds become projects or series of art pieces that people can piece together, interpret and perceive but rarely get the full story. I like to leave areas blank for people to explore themselves within, maybe see themselves placed into the worlds I make. My art is not just an escape into wanderlust for myself, but also for everyone else.
